Overview
The Low country Chapter of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society (DFCS) is a regional branch of the national DFCS,
dedicated to Serving the Low Country of Georgia and South Carolina, honoring and preserving the legacy of those who have demonstrated heroism or extraordinary achievement in aerial flight.
Serving the Low country region of Georgia, the chapter provides a community for recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) to connect,
share experiences, and engage in educational and commemorative activities.
About the Distinguished Flying Cross Society
Established in 1994, the Distinguished Flying Cross Society is a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit war veterans' organization.
The society's mission is to honor, preserve, and teach the legacy of heroism or extraordinary achievement in aerial flight for which the DFC is awarded.
The DFCS serves as a membership association for individuals who have received the DFC,
fostering a community that celebrates their remarkable contributions to aviation and national defense.
Mission
To honor, preserve, and teach the legacy of heroism or extraordinary achievement in aerial flight for which the DFC is awarded.
Activities and Programs
The chapter meets formally six times a year, graciously supported by the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum.
Guest speakers are invited and most recently we received a presentation from Dr. Barry Lanman,
Professor of Oral History, who has supported the DFCS for many years.
He produced the beautiful book “On Heroic Wings”
and is currently working on another project for the DFCS with an introduction by Gary Sinese.
On other occasions we tour different industry companies and military bases in the Low Country.
Recently we were hosted by the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC for two days.
Overnight billeting was provided by the base for this two day orientation of their F-35 program.
We received operational overview of this Marine Corps latest fighter, interacted with the F-35 pilots, and toured their facility.
Our members received wonderful hospitality as well as a dinner and luncheon.
Future outings may include Hunter Army Airbase and Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation.
